Frequently Asked Questions & Tips on Using the getSTEM Website

getSTEM is a web portal designed to connect Minnesota educators with science and technology businesses, in order to better prepare students for post-secondary education programs and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

getSTEM is a partnership that began between the Minnesota Technology Association (MnTech) and the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) along with sponsoring businesses including: Avtex, Microsoft, and 3M.

Teachers may use the website to create postings to Ask for community assistance in having materials donated to their classroom, guest presentations, volunteers for field trips and much more. Local businesses use the website to Offer their K-12 outreach programs that teachers may incorporate into their classroom.

Teachers, educators, businesses and STEM professionals alike use getSTEM to connect to the community. Just ask, just offer…it just makes sense!

getSTEM is designed to provide K-12 educators with resources for their classroom. Teachers and may use the website to Ask for materials, supplies and volunteers in the classroom, as well as opportunities and experiences outside the classroom.

Business leaders, professionals, parents and community members may use getSTEM to Offer science, technology, engineering, and math resources to teachers and K-12 educators.

Click the Register link at the top of the website and fill out the form. Profiles are 100% FREE, and you may post as many Asks and Offers as you like.

You must have a Profile and be logged in to create an Ask or Offer, as well as to respond to a Just Ask or Just Offer posting.

There are multiple ways to post an Ask or an Offer. You can click the orange “+ASK OR OFFER” button at the top of any page, or click the orange icon in the lower right corner of the website.

You will need to have a profile and be signed in to post an Ask or an Offer.

We find that getSTEM participants are generally willing to volunteer in one hour segments or make small monetary donations for basic materials and supplies to support K-12 classrooms. Guest presentations, field trip locations or opportunities and informational interviews are also great examples.

Your posting must be 500 characters or less. The more information you fill out, the better your chances of receiving a connection.

The feedback from teachers is that having a good speaker come into the classroom to share a little bit about a day in the life makes a great offer. Additionally, left over or unused materials that can be gifted to K-12 education, internships, education grants, teacher workshops, corporate K-12 outreach programs and activities.
