Engineering Animal Enrichment with the Minnesota Zoo
The Minnesota Zoo is looking to partner with a few highschool teachers to help pilot a high school version of the ZOOMS AnimalEnrichment Design Challenge for the 2018-2019 School year. The Minnesota ZooZOOMS Design Challenge offers students a chance to develop a solution to a realproblem faced by Zoo Keepers and staff at the Minnesota Zoo. During the pilot,students will be challenged with designing an enrichment, which is somethingthat can be offered to animals to provide mental and physical stimulation whilealso encouraging natural behaviors. During this long term classroom project,students must use the engineering design process while applying their scienceand math knowledge, creativity, and problem solving skills to develop aninnovative enrichment for one of the animals at the Minnesota Zoo!
During the pilot, chosen teachers will receive a $650stipend upon completion of the following:
1) Meet with Minnesota Zoo education staff 2 days over thesummer to overview the current ZOOMS design challenge program and plan ways toimplement the challenge at the high school level for the 2018-2019 school year.
2)Develop new resources and tools that supportimplementation
3)Fully Implement the design challenge into your classroom
4) Provide program feedback and ongoing communication withthe Minnesota Zoo during implementation.
5) Provide Minnesota Zoo with pre and post implementationstudent survey data regarding their experience with the design challenge.
